Flying Overseas
I’m writing from somewhere above the Atlantic Ocean. Sometimes you just got to get away, right?
I got an amazing deal, finding a round trip ticket for only 36k frequent flier miles that my parents gifted me.
And I’m heading to Lisbon, Portugal!
I’m also part of a home sharing app called Kindred that is letting me stay seven nights for just around $100! You should check it out— they have places to stay everywhere. (Use my code to get 5 nights to travel before you host once you’re verified: mar.sme4).
To be honest, Portugal was never on my radar of places to go, but since booking this trip, soooooo many people have effusively told me about how incredible of a place it is. And I’m about to find out myself!
Yes, I’ll take a lot of pictures—check out my profile on Facebook to catch the most of them. But I’ll surely tell you about the trip in next week’s newsletter.
I have to admit, I was a little nervous about leaving today. Maybe it was just the normal nerves about making sure I packed everything I want to bring. But for some reason, I felt like I was about to board a rocket and blast off into space…and we all know how that can go.
I’m not afraid of dying, I just don’t want to. Still, I cleaned my apartment super well, so if I don’t make it back, the place will be in order. I think it’d be pretty cool to just open my apartment door and let people come in and just take whatever stuff they’d want. Kind of like organ donation, but with home furnishings.
I think there’s also a normal anxiety that surrounds going to someplace you’ve never been, especially if it’s a foreign country. Maneuvering public transportation is always a challenge, for starters. I guess the fear of the unknown is why most people don’t pick up and fly across the ocean. And I despise jet lag.
But for me, I want an adventure. I want to be surprised and challenged. I want to see things I’ve never seen and eat things I’ve never imagined I’d eat (within reason!). I want to enlarge my perspective on life. I want to meet new people with beautiful accents.
The value of travel is making the world smaller, and changing yourself in the process. You’re never too old to change your mind.
I can’t wait to see what happens!

Have an amazing trip!
